Essential Screen Skills FACILITATES THE QUT Experience in Screen and Media

QUT Experience in Screen and Media

10th & 11th June, 2024

Over 2 days QUT Creative Industries Precinct was taken over by 300 students travelling as far as Tin Can Bay, Toowoomba or a short walk from Kelvin Grove. Students from Screen and Media Gateway Schools accessed campus tours, course information at QUT and hands on practical workshops from mobile filmmaking to cutting edge technology crew roles for LED Virtual filmmaking.

This collaboration was led by Project Manager Moneth Montemayor and championed by Professor Mark Ryan who says;

“It was a pleasure working with Essential Screen Skills to deliver such a fun and educational day for everyone involved. Seeing the creativity and how engaged students were working together to film a dinosaur scene using an LED wall and to make a one-shot short, was fantastic!”.

The vision for the experience was to ensure that students didn’t just walk through a campus to be wowed by the facilities but to take on a learning experience where they can envision a potential future in Screen and Media whether that be as a content creator, a sound recordist, actor or motion capture artist. Course information delivered by Dr Sue Cake placed emphasis on opportunities for dual degrees that enables a study of Fine Arts with Law or Business as well as a pathway through a Diploma before a Bachelor Degree.

Essential Screen Skills would like to thank the QUT team for making the experience possible: Professor Mark Ryan QUT, Senior Lecturer Dr. Sue Cake, Associate Professor Phoebe Hart, Lecturer Paul Van Opdenbosch, Lecturer Dr. Maria Zelenskaya, Lecturer Jason Tolsher, and Lecturer Dr. Nicole McCuaig and Dr Ruari Elkington, Senior Lecturer.

Participating Screen and Media Gateway Schools:

Testimonials

“It was a fantastic opportunity for high school students to come to QUT to gain value insight into studying film, television, animation and virtual production at university and to gain information about developing an exciting career in the screen industries.”
– Professor Mark Ryan, Academic Lead, Engagement, School of Creative Arts

“After attending an excursion to QUT, it influenced my decision to look more into QUT as a university option”
– Kaylee S, Year 12 student

“This experience day at QUT gave my students a solid picture of what they could be learning and where they could be learning if they pursued further studies in Film. The motion capture activity was an eye opener for and a big hit with them but they also enjoyed flexing their creative muscles with the mobile filming activity too. It was a great day”
– Lisa Kelly, Head of Department Performing Arts Bremer SHS

“The Essential Screen Skills’ facilitated QUT Experience Day was an excellent opportunity for the Year 10 Media Arts and Year 11 FTVNM students to gain valuable insight into the tertiary pathways available at QUT. The experience was perfectly pitched for the students in this age group, and the activities were engaging and highly relevant to the course offered at MMC. Many of our students have stated that they now know that they want to study Screen and Media in some capacity at QUT, when previously they didn’t know what they wanted to do when they left school. Thank you Essential Screen Skills!!!”
–  Karyn Chapman, Lead Teacher FTVNM and Media Arts, Mary MacKillop College

“The workshop provided opportunity to gain hands-on camera and sound recording skills, inspiring careers information and practical activity ideas that we could take into our classroom”
– April James, Curriculum Leader FTVNM
