Event: Youth Pitch Masterclass presented by Asia Pacific Screen Academy, Australian Teachers of Media (QLD) and Essential Screen Skills
Venue: The Langham, Gold Coast
Date: Saturday 30th November, 2024
When: 8:30am to 1:30pm
Who: students from year 10 to 12 studying a screen and media subject are encouraged to apply (Media Arts, Media Arts in Practice, Cert 3 in Screen and Media, Film, Television and New Media)
Selected participants will spend a few hours with local and international producers on their film/tv concept to improve their pitching skills. To apply, students are required to create a 1 page pitch for a Film/TV/Web series ideas and creator’s statement. This pitch will be provided to the producers and the masterclass will enable participants the opportunity to refine their pitch.

INDUSTRY MENTORS

Liz Kearney
Liz Kearney is an Australian producer based in Melbourne and has produced numerous feature films, TV series and short films. Liz produced her first feature These Final Hoursin 2013. The film premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2013 and screened in Cannes as part of Directors’ Fortnight in 2014. Alongside Robert Connolly and Maggie Miles, Liz produced the Australian film Paper Planes. The family feature was released by Village Roadshow and grossed almost $10 million at the Australian box office. The film screened at numerous festivals including Toronto and Berlin and won the inaugural Cinefest Oz Film Prize in 2014.
In 2017 alongside producers Robert Connolly and John Harvey, Liz produced the comedy drama series The Warriors for the ABC. She also produced the 9-minute stop motion animated film Lost Property Office with cardboard sculptor Daniel Agdag. The short won Best Short Animation and Best Director at the 2017 Sydney Film Festival and Best Short Animation at the 2018 AACTAs and was shortlisted for an Academy Award in 2018.
Most recently Liz produced Robert Connolly’s feature film Blueback, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022 and screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, and Jub Clerc’s debut feature Sweet As, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, winning the NETPAC Award, and at the Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Crystal Bear in the Generation Kplus section.

Lai Weijie
Lai Weijie is a film producer based in Singapore and Toronto. In 2010 he co-founded E&W Films, a Singapore-based film development and production company, the producer of POP AYE (2017) by Kirsten Tan which received awards at Sundance, Rotterdam, and Zurich, and Taste (2021) by Lê Bảo, that received the Special Jury Award in the Encounters section of the recent Berlinale Film Festival where it had its world premiere. Upcoming projects include CNC Development Award recipient Mongrel by Chiang Wei Liang, developed at the Cannes Residence, Talents Tokyo, and TorinoFilmLab ScriptLab. Weijie has several years of experience as a senior programmer formerly at the Singapore International Film Festival, developing its film academy and overseeing its Asian selection. He has served on the selection committee for several fund bodies.
